Summertime, sweet summertime—get ready for warmer weather, poolside shenanigans, and days filled with all sorts of adventures. But while you’re out having fun this summer, it’s important to make sure that your body is getting enough rest each night. Conditions like sleep apnea can prevent you from getting the rest you need, but there are also many other factors out there that can disrupt your sleep during the summer! Here are some tips from your dentist to help you get quality rest this season.

Why Do I Have Trouble Sleeping During the Summer?

Summertime is supposed to be relaxing; so, if you aren’t getting enough sleep, you probably aren’t going to feel very relaxed! There are many possible reasons for not getting enough sleep during the summer, but a few include:

  • Warmer temperatures (indoors and outdoors).
  • Seasonal allergies that contribute to sleep apnea.
  • The sun setting later in the day.
  • Summer vacation plans that disrupt your sleep schedule.

Tips For Better Summertime Sleep

You should prioritize getting enough sleep each night, especially during the summertime so you don’t miss out on having any fun or risk developing health problems! Consider the following to ensure a better night’s sleep:

  • Try to stay cool – Heat and humidity can make it very difficult to fall asleep, and some places get pretty darn hot during the summertime. If you don’t have air conditioning in your bedroom, it’s important that you’re able to keep air circulating throughout the room. Also try to reduce how much sunlight enters the room, as it can noticeably heat things up! Dimming the lights can also help to reduce the heat in the room while providing a more comfortable setting.
  • Sleep In (and on) breathable materials – It might be time to swap out your heavy winter quilt for a lighter, more breathable one. There are plenty of bedding options made of natural fibers that will feel much cooler as you sleep. Sometimes keeping your feet outside of the covers can help to cool you off, too!
  • Establish a bedtime routine – Having a consistent daily bedtime can play an integral role in helping you fall asleep each night. Try to avoid disruptions around this time and limit the number of electronic devices and screens that you use. Be mindful of how summer vacations can impact your routine!
  • Avoid late-night snacks, tobacco, and alcohol – Everything that you consume during the day can impact your sleep that evening, so items like cigarettes, alcohol, and even food can impact your sleeping patterns.
  • Seek sleep apnea treatment – if you’re able to receive a sleep test and receive treatment for your sleep apnea, this will also ensure that you’re able to enter deep sleep and give your body the chance to truly recharge.

Summer is meant to be enjoyable—but you’ll miss out on the fun if you feel groggy all the time from lack of sleep. Follow these tips to ensure that you’re getting enough rest this summer.
