In September 2020, local teenager Ashton Strawn was preparing for a surgery that would address his Diastrophic Dysplasia. At 15 years old, his rare form of dwarfism makes it more difficult to move around and painful to remain seated for long periods of time.
Scheduled to undergo a medical procedure in Delaware, the family raised money through a fundraiser to help pay for the cost. Unfortunately, the funds were stolen, leaving the family feeling hopeless. It wasn’t until their family dentist, Dr. Machen learned of the situation that he agreed to share Ashton’s story and raise additional funds.
Knowing the mounting bills will be arriving shortly after the procedure, he agreed to contact the hospitals to negotiate and lower the cost as well as recruit friends who were willing to give. Dr. Machen offered to keep track of any incoming donations, organize the trip to Delaware, and ensure those giving would know where their money was being spent.
